The week in Vingåker: opera, flea markets and a packed Friday evening
Week 30 brings culture, children's activities and summer outings — and a Friday evening with three events running at once. Plus: good news from Slottsskolan and a new way to pick up your bus card.
The week when Vingåker feels most like summer
Week 30 is the week when summer in Vingåker gathers in one place. There is opera, children's activities, church music and a Friday evening so packed you almost have to choose. At the same time, a few everyday stories arrive from the municipality: this year's ninth-graders at Slottsskolan have done well, and those who applied for a bus card can pick it up more easily than before.
Slottsskolan has presented its best annual result in ten years: 81.4 per cent of ninth-graders have upper-secondary eligibility, and their merit value is 223.9 — the second highest during the same period. In addition, 84 per cent of pupils in the latest school health survey answered that they enjoy school well or very well, which the municipality states is ten percentage points above the average for Sörmland. Figures in themselves are dry, but they affect a place. They mean that young people in Vingåker have a school where they succeed, and that they enjoy being there while they do.
Another practical change concerns the bus cards. Anyone who has applied for a free card for children, young people or seniors can now collect it at the municipal office reception on Parkvägen 8, two working days after applying. The reception is open weekdays 08:00–15:00, closed for lunch 12:00–13:00. Summer holiday cards are valid until 19 August, senior cards until the end of the year. It is a small detail that saves those waiting for a card some time — and makes it a little easier to get around the municipality during summer.
The rest of the week is about being out and about. On Monday, children and young people up to 17 can read, play or train with a social service dog at the library. It is drop-in, no prior knowledge required, and free of charge. For those wanting something larger in the evening, Tosca comes to Säfstaholm Farm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday — Puccini's opera performed in Swedish by Storgårdens Musikförening. The same applies to the summer music at Österåker Church on Thursday, where Christian Kjellvander is on the programme with free entry.
Friday is the week's most compact day. At 17:30, Kvällstrollet starts at Trollåsen Motor Area with folk racing for juniors, women/veterans and seniors. Entry is SEK 80, children under 15 go free. At the same time, or shortly after, the choice is between opera at Säfstaholm Castle — "The Two Cecilias" with free entry and no registration — and a summer party at Folkets Park with Christina Lindberg, Nick Borgen and Johan Eriksson. Tickets for the park party are sold via Tickster for SEK 450. Three arrangements, three different moods, the same evening. It is the kind of thing that makes Vingåker feel alive in the middle of summer, even if you only go to one of them.
The weekend takes a calmer pace instead. On Saturday and Sunday, the village association Kreativa Läppe organises a flea market and curiosities round in the village and surroundings, starting at 10:00 both days. Here there are finds, marmalade, smoked fish and more. It is free to walk around, and it is one of those summer feelings that require nothing more than showing up. On Sunday afternoon it is time for Högsjö Industrial Museum at Pampetorpsallén 2, where the museum is open with guided tours of the Mangelboden and textile history, plus a summer café. No registration is needed, and it is free of charge.
For anyone wanting an ongoing activity all week, HittaUt remains: checkpoints around Vingåker until 30 September, with maps at the Tourist Office at Säfstaholm Castle, OKQ8, Coop and Ica Cityhallen. And Säfstaholm's summer exhibitions — including works by Lasse Åberg — continue daily 11:00–16:00 until 27 September. Thorslundkagge in Högsjö also receives visitors for guided tours and tastings, but advance registration is required there.
One last thing to keep in mind: SMHI has issued a warning for the risk of forest fire in, among other places, Södermanland County, with expected high to very high risk during the afternoon and early evening, and up to extremely high risk locally. Nothing that needs to cancel the week's plans, but a reminder to be careful with barbecues and open fires outdoors.
In summary, this is one of those weeks when Vingåker does not need to be explained. There is plenty to do, whether you want to sit on a church pew listening to music, run around flea market stalls, or simply enjoy a quiet coffee at an industrial museum. Pick what suits you, check the organiser's page before going, and have a good week.
